Enlightened Monks?!

To some, that seems like a contradiction in terms. Anticlerical portrayals of Catholic intellectuals like to present an overweight, undereducated monk as the epitome of unenlightened superstition. Recent scholarship is showing that up until the fateful events around 1789 and 1803, there was indeed a vibrant Catholic Enlightenment, even though one must differentiate that term carefully. Ulrich Lehner's new book, „Enlightened Monks. The German Benedictines, 1740-1803“ (Oxford University Press 2011), has already sold out its first edition. He will be presenting the book in Vienna on Monday, August 1, 2011 at 5 pm in the
Maria-Theresienstraße 9/4, A-1090 Wien. Contact: Dr. Thomas Wallnig Tel. +43-(0)1-4277/40891 ▪ ▪
